Admission Process for Grades 1-8
The admissions process for each school year begins in January of that calendar year. Tours may be scheduled prior to January, but applications will not be accepted prior to January. The first round of our admissions process for new student applicants will be made in late March. The application process is as follows:
STEP ONE: Application and Report Cards
An application packet can be obtained from this website or the school office. The following must accompany the application upon submission:
- A non-refundable application fee of $100
- Copies of the student’s report cards from the past TWO years or any progress reports received from the student’s pre-school
STEP TWO: Teacher Recommendations
The applicant’s current academic or preschool teacher must complete a recommendation form and mail that form to the Admissions Office, c/o Horizon Prep. The application process will not proceed to step three until those recommendations have been received.
STEP THREE: Family Interview
After review of the complete application packet outlined in steps one and two, Horizon Prep will contact the applicant’s parent/guardian to schedule a family interview. The applying student must be present for the family interview.
STEP FOUR: Entrance Exam
An entrance exam will be scheduled after the successful completion of steps one through three. The entrance exam must be taken at Horizon Prep and be proctored by a Horizon Prep faculty member. There is a testing fee of $150 due on or before the scheduled test date. All new students applying to Horizon Prep for grades two through eight will be given the ITBS Survey Battery to confirm their readiness and to determine potential strengths and weaknesses. Students applying for first grade will be given alternative testing developed by Horizon Prep curriculum specialists.
Members of the Admissions Committee carefully review each applicant’s file. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Screening and selection are based on behavioral and academic performance at prior schools, the ability of Horizon Prep to meet the student’s needs, test results, lifestyle choices, and a willingness of the student’s parents to play an active role in the education process and in cooperating with the administration and faculty to promote the growth of the whole student. At Horizon Prep’s discretion, the school reserves the right to deny enrollment to any applicant at any stage of the admissions process, provided that all decisions are consistent with Horizon Prep’s non-discrimination policy as described in this Handbook. All questions regarding the review process, or the outcome of application, must be addressed in writing to the Admissions Committee c/o Horizon Prep.
Nondiscrimination Policy
Horizon Prep admits students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin, and affords all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to all students at school.
