Horizon Prep: Athletic Program
Mission Statement
Horizon Prep is committed to developing a strong athletic program for Middle School. To that end, we are currently working with our credentialed physical education teachers and Athletic Director to create opportunities for sports teams for both young men and young women in the fall, winter and spring seasons. Many of these policies are yet to be developed. Students who wish to be involved in athletics must have a current physical exam in their file and maintain a 2.5 GPA and satisfactory citizenship marks. Should a student fail to maintain these requirements, he/she will remain ineligible until these marks change.
Football
There is another Horizon Prep Football season on the books, and what a season it was! The Lions started the season out with a couple of heartbreaking losses in week one to the Rock Academy and St. James. The next week though, the team started to find their groove and won the next six games in a row leading into the Spirit Bowl defeating: La Jolla Country Day twice, Francis Parker, Santa Fe Christian, St. James, and Rancho Santa Fe. This years Spirit Bowl had eight teams participating raising over $1,600.00 for abused children to attend Camp. The Lions took third place, finishing 2-1. The last four games of the season went into the win column also, giving the team a final record of 12-3.
The boys really came together as a team. Together they learned how to compete with integrity, good effort, and attitudes. Above all God was glorified by these young men through the way they represented their school in competition. Coaches Josh Merchant, Brian Mcguire, Harry Grove, and Jared Petty would like to say congratulations to the Athletes on a storybook season.
Volleyball
What an exciting season! Skills such as passing and serving were quickly mastered techniques by this young and enthusiastic team. With each game their confidence and abilities soared. Second year head coach Suzanne Demiter and assitant Emily Merchant are so proud of our girls as they continued to grow, improve, and glorify God with every match. Despite their opponents being a few years older and feet taller, this team rose to every challenge. Team captain Sara Khatib was without doubt the "Passing Queen". Avery Moores, Keaton Kratzer, and Haley Coleman scored numerous aces throughout the season. It was difficult to get the ball past Jolie Foster and Brianna Bertken with their quick feet. Ali Acosta and Caiti McCallum kept the team spirit on high. Despite winning only one match, this team excelled in their abilities to communicate, pass, serve, and work together. Overall is was truly an inspirational season watching the Lord work through these lady lions, and to Him, they gave the glory.
Thanks to all the parents for their encouragement and love throughout the season! We are looking forward to next season already!
Surf Club
This year is the first year of Surf Club at Horizon Prep! We started the year off with eight surfers and we hope that in the years to come we can add to our team! Surf Club meets at Power House Park in Del Mar every other Wednesday where the Surfers can fellowship and catch some waves! Our three dedicated coaches Alan Leftwick, Greg De La Valette, and Nick Ferreira are there to encourage, instruct, and pray for our Horizon Prep Surfers!!!
Soccer
We're getting our girl's soccer team kick started for the '05-'06 school year, with first-kickers all the way up to trophy-collectors on our starting lineup. It seems there is a goal-full of opportunities to play a lot of games with a lot of schools, and we'll have no shortage of some good competition. The Horizon Prep team this year has several veteran players, as well as some new girls to the club, and it seems to be a great mix of talent. It feels as though we will have a great year, even if we don't win every single game, and that all the girls will be much more skilled at season's end, even if they aren't all ready to go semi-pro. Come and see what should be some exciting games through the end of February on Tuesdays and Thursdays here in our own Horizon Prep backyard. GO LADY LIONS!
Basketball
Another season of exciting Boys Basketball is getting underway this winter here on campus! Horizon Prep will again field a 5th/6th grade team as well as a 7th/8th grade team, both of which turned in winning campaigns last year. Bolstered with returning players from last years squads, both teams look to improve on the successful standards set in their inaugural season. Second year head coach John Winfield's 7th/8th grade squad will take on a smaller and more aggressive look in this years campaign being paced by 8th grade standout Trenton Von Yokes. The 5th/6th grade team will hand over the head coaching reigns to last years assistant coach Josh Merchant. Coach Merchant is quickly becoming a coach of all trades, as he lead this years football team to a outstanding 12-3 record. He looks to carry over the success he had with the football team into basketball with his disciplined and passionate coaching style. Coach Merchant will look to the speedy 6th grade ball handler Zack Meziere among others to bring home yet another winning season for the Lions. Come out and support our boys as they promise to play an exciting brand of basketball that all are sure to enjoy!
