A couple of times while Christmas shopping for my kids I’ve found myself holding something and thinking, “How long will this last?”

You see, each year my wife will hold an annual household ‘purge’ as we go through toys, clothes, and other things that are broken, outgrown, or long neglected, but for the most part were once brand new Christmas gifts.

Now I’m not ‘scrooging' out on Christmas, but it does bring to mind the one Gift we’ve all been given that never gets old.

In our Bibles we read of the Nativity account, where Jesus was born to a young virgin named Mary and her husband Joseph.  While for the average passer-by, it may have appeared insignificant, it was a moment in time that changed everything.  On this special evening God gave us the most important and lasting gift anyone can receive; He gave us His Son.

Jesus would grow, live, and experience the same challenges and emotions that we endure as people, but He lived in a different way.  This, as Jesus explained, was His Father’s will and He said that He had come to serve others and not Himself.  Eventually, the powerful words and actions of Jesus would cause certain men to hate Him and murder Him on a Roman cross, but this wouldn’t be the end.  Three days later Jesus would rise from the dead, fulfilling what He had foretold.

In the life and death of Jesus, we have received forgiveness from our sins and the power to live free from that which once condemned us -- our own sin.  Today, the Bible teaches that Jesus lives and resides not only in Heaven awaiting His return, but in the hearts of all who believe and put their trust in Him.  All of this is only possible because God gave us the greatest gift of all -- Jesus.  He is ‘The Gift’ who never wears out, never gets old, and continues to be the most valuable gift in which we continue to receive day after day.

This Christmas as we buy, wrap, and give each other gifts, may it not only remind us of the gift of Christ but may it draw us closer to Him.  May our celebrations prompt us to search for Him and find the treasures we have in such a Savior.

If you have never received this gift from Jesus, you have nothing to lose!  Receive Him today by simply believing -- believing He is God and that He came and died for you.  Ask Him to forgive you of your sin and fill you with His Spirit to work inside your life.  Now, go and tell someone you received Jesus!  The gift of Jesus will make this Christmas the best one of all!

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
